The Unresolved Shadow of the Wounded Masculine

The Power of Liminal Space in Leadership and Transformation

“Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing there is a field. I'll meet you there." ― Rumi

What we are witnessing in the world right now is the unfolding shadow of unresolved wounded masculine energy, accumulated over decades. The dominance of control, aggression, suppression of emotions, and an overemphasis on power and competition has created systemic imbalances in leadership, relationships, and society as a whole.

Rather than facing vulnerability and embracing the deeper, more integrated aspects of masculinity, much of the world has been operating from a place of fear, scarcity, and domination. This shadow manifests in political conflicts, environmental destruction, corporate burnout, and disconnection from emotional intelligence and collective well-being.

However, as these wounds become more visible, they also present an opportunity for healing—an invitation for men and leaders to step into a more conscious, balanced, and regenerative way of being. By acknowledging and working through these patterns, we can collectively shift from a paradigm of control to connection, from isolation to collaboration, and from force to presence, redefining leadership for a new era.

Navigating the Liminal Space in an AI-Driven World

What I notice these days in the different circles and communities I’m part of is that the power of holding the space in between is becoming increasingly present and essential. I wrote about this earlier in Embracing Complexity and Transcending Polarities. It feels as if our inner beings are preparing us for a distinct change—one that prepares us, as humans, how to be with the accelerating force of Artificial Intelligence that is already upon us.

We are in an era of accelerating transition—technological advancement will not slow down anytime soon. As AI continues to shape and dictate many aspects of our world, humans are cultivating new ways to hold, create, and define value for ourselves. The question is: Do we remain sovereign beings of immense worth, or do we risk becoming mere commodities in an AI-driven system?

The choice is ours.

I believe the answer lies in learning to experience the liminal space—the profound in-between where true human value emerges. This space, where the old no longer exists but the new has yet to take form, is where real growth and transformation occur. It is in this space that we learn to embrace uncertainty, unlock deeper wisdom, and reclaim what it truly means to be human.

Liminal space is not just about transition—it is the very place where we become who we are meant to be.

What is Liminal Space?

Liminality comes from the Latin word limen, meaning “threshold.” It represents the transitional phase between what was and what will be—a time of uncertainty, discomfort, and immense potential. It’s the space between shedding old belief systems—no longer serving us, and stepping into the new, the unknown.

Liminal space can be external—a physical place like airports, doorways, or sacred sites where transformation is felt—or internal, where deep shifts in identity, perspective, or purpose occur. Whether through personal challenges, career changes, or societal shifts, we all pass through liminal spaces at key moments in life.

Why Liminal Space is Crucial for Growth

Most of us resist uncertainty. We rush to fill the gap, seeking clarity and control. Yet, liminal space is where deep transformation takes place. It forces us to pause, reflect, and surrender before taking the next step forward.

In my work—whether through Unconditional Men Circles, or A New Kind of Leadership—I intentionally create and hold liminal spaces for transformation. These are moments where old narratives break down, deeper truths emerge, and individuals step into a more conscious and integrated version of themselves.

Liminal Space in Masculine Leadership and Personal Growth

In the evolution of masculine leadership, we are in a collective liminal space. The old paradigms of masculinity—domination, suppression of emotions, rigid structures—are breaking down. A new, integrated version of masculinity is emerging, one that embraces strength and vulnerability, purpose and presence, action and reflection.

But stepping into this new paradigm requires courage. It means sitting in the unknown, in the discomfort of not having all the answers, and allowing a deeper wisdom to emerge.

This is where the magic happens—when we step away from daily distractions and enter a shared liminal space, we gain clarity, shed what no longer serves us, and open ourselves to a new way of being. This is why I choose to work in circles, where transformation is amplified through deep listening and shared experience—seeing ourselves in the other and the other within ourselves. In this collective space, growth and insight accelerate, revealing truths that cannot be accessed alone.
